Top 5 Things to Do in Encinitas, California
Just a half hour north of San Diego is beautiful Encinitas. A Spanish word, meaning “Little Oaks” is still fitting today considering how they use them as part of their climate plan. Encinitas has some of my favorite things all in one place! GREAT food, great beer, great people, and some calming views! In this article, I’m going to show you the top 5 things to do in Encinitas. This is my second time exploring Encinitas, and to revisit this place is something that makes my heart sing. Seriously. The people in this beach community are all very happy to help strangers find their way or suggest good spots to check out. Now it is my turn to share with you the places and things I love so much about this city.
#1 Q’Ero Restaurant:
Well, for those of you who know me, food is my #1. Always and without question. The first time I came to Encinitas and saw Peruvian food, I became overwhelmingly excited. So excited, that I ordered two meals AND dessert! The server was taken aback, but when traveling and finding a good place to eat, you order whatever you can sometimes. The restaurant is a small, and very welcoming place to be. My favorite dish is the Aji De Gallina, something I’m going to suggest everyone try out! My second go to is the Lomo Saltado. With these dishes, the beautifully styled space, and the language you hear from the kitchen, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled to Peru! If you decide to eat here, tell Carmen, Monica, and Niko, A Traveling Teacher says hello, as these people hold a special place in my heart. The funny thing is I’ve only met them twice! Just goes to show how welcoming and pleasant these people are (and how far a happy belly goes).
#2 Modern Times Brewery
Talk about a beautifully styled space! This employee owned brewery in Encinitas sends you right back to the 60’s. The decorations, antiques from past generations, and overall feel of this place is far out. A great place to grab a beer and socialize, the bar’s setup is perfect for making new friends, and conversing with old ones. Be sure to try the Timewave Zero if it is still on tap!
#3 Meditation Gardens of SRF
Koi ponds, various plants and trees, and benches are all over these meditation gardens. Enjoy some relaxation, and even some meditation if you’re up for it. (I mean, they are called Meditation Gardens!) The huge koi fish swim in their clean, interconnected ponds throughout the whole garden. There is also a little history behind this place you might find interesting:One of two meditation centers organized by the Self-Realization Fellowship, followers of a man, Paramahansa Yogananada, who brought yoga and his teachings to the west. One of my favorite quotes from Yogananda is:
“The ideal of an all-sided education for youth had always been close to my heart. I saw clearly the arid results of ordinary instruction, aimed only at the development of body and intellect.”— Paramahansa Yogananda
#4 Gelato 101
I’ll be honest, if you put any type of food in front of me, I’m going to eat it, love it, and ask for more (as Q’ero understood when I arrived saying I was hungry). Dessert, however? I can live without. For me to suggest this place for their.. well… their Gelato (if that didn’t come to you from their name), means it is well worth the visit. Just a tasteful (literally), relaxed atmosphere to enjoy this refreshing treat.(Photo Credit: Taylor D’Apice Photography)
#5 Moonlight State Beach
Moonlight State Beach: An amazing spot to catch the sunset and have a dip in the warm waters. Like to surf? $25 will get you a full day of surfing, and a lifetime full of great memories.
Final Thoughts
So there you have it! Whether you are in Encinitas for only a few days, a week, or a month, here are some things you can do that will keep everyone happy. Encinitas is a very chill place where restaurants and bars meet the ocean, and I think of going back all the time.‘Til next time,Pete - A Traveling Teacher
